NBN satellite ground station contracts signed
The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, today announced that NBN Co has signed contracts for the construction of ten National Broadband Network (NBN) satellite ground stations.
“Contracts worth a total of around $180 million have been awarded to Perkins (WA) Pty Ltd to build four satellite ground stations in Western Australia; and Cockram Corporation Pty Ltd for six ground stations in Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia and Tasmania,” Senator Conroy said.
Construction of the ground stations will start early next year and be complete in 2014. The ground stations are an essential part of the NBN's long-term satellite service, which will deliver world class, affordable broadband to rural and remote Australia from 2015.
The locations of eight out of the ten ground stations already announced are:
- Moonyoonooka (near Geraldton), Brown Range (near Carnarvon), and Binduli (near Kalgoorlie) in Western Australia;
- Bourke, and Woolooma (near Merimbula);
- Geeveston in Tasmania;
- Ceduna in South Australia; and
- Roma in Queensland.
“The ten ground stations will create up to 300 jobs during their construction, part of the 18,000 jobs that the rollout of the NBN will create during its peak.”
"The awarding of these contracts is another sign the NBN rollout is ramping up across the country. The NBN is on track to have fibre construction commenced or completed for 758,000 homes and businesses by the end of the year."
Senator Conroy made the announcement while officially opening iiNet’s first retail iiStore in Subiaco, Perth, which showcases the benefits and applications of the National Broadband Network.
iiNet is an NBN retail service provider, across the NBN's satellite, fixed wireless and fibre technologies.
“I congratulate iiNet on this milestone event. iiNet is a great Western Australian company that has grown to be a tough competitor to Australia's major telecommunications companies."
“It's a great credit to the company and its leader, Michael Malone, that iiNet is now a permanent part of Australia's telecommunications landscape.
“The iiStore takes iiNet to the next level, giving everyone the chance to experiment with their products, as well as experience how the NBN's high-speed broadband will make a difference to all of our lives - whether it’s in our homes or at work.”
