Condolence Statement for Richard E. Butler

The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, today expressed his deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr Richard E. Butler. Dick Butler died on the morning of 23 June 2012.

Dick Butler was a well respected and influential Australian representative to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). He was the first and only Australian to occupy the position of Secretary-General of the ITU, which he held from 1983 to 1989.

"The Australian telecommunications and radiocommunications community is deeply saddened by the sudden loss of Dick Butler," Senator Conroy said.

"Dick helped shape the telecommunications industry we know today. In the decades following his leadership of the ITU, he continued to make a substantial contribution.
