Government welcomes Optus 4G investment
The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, welcomed today's confirmation that Optus will invest in a new 4G network using TD-LTE technology.
"The Government welcomes the investment by Optus to improve and expand its network," Senator Conroy said.
"The Optus announcement complements the Gillard Government's investment in the National Broadband Network.
"Mobile operators know that high-speed fixed-line broadband infrastructure is critical to meeting future demand for wireless data.
"Smartphones, tablets and other portable devices are an important part of how Australians get online and involve themselves in the digital economy. Further investment in 4G mobile networks will ensure consumers and businesses get the improved services they need.
"Optus's investment in its new LTE network is a significant use of the spectrum previously held by vividwireless, leading to better wireless services for Australians over the long term. The investment demonstrates the public benefit achieved through the process of renewing 15 year spectrum licences."
