New Director appointed to the Board of Australia Post

The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, today announced the appointment of Mr Peter Carne as a Director of Australia Post.

"The appointment will be for three years from 14 December 2009," Senator Conroy said.

Mr Carne has served in both the public and private sectors and is currently the Public Trustee of Queensland where he is Chairman of both its Investment Board and Audit Committee.

He has served as a Director with Lexon Insurance Pte Ltd (2005–2009), a director of the College of Law Queensland (2005–2009) and a Director with the Tarong Energy Corporation (1999–2007). He has served in various roles with the Queensland Law Society since 1992, including as Chief Executive Officer from 2005 until February 2009.

Mr Carne is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the Australia Institute of Management, and has received the Centenary Medal for Distinguished Service to the Legal Profession.

"I am confident that Mr Carne will make a valuable contribution to the Board," Senator Conroy said. "He brings a wealth of experience that will be beneficial to the Board’s role in determining Australia Post’s objectives, strategies and policies in the years ahead."

The Board of Australia Post consists of up to nine directors. With the exception of the Managing Director, all serve in a  non-executive capacity. Directors are appointed by the Governor-General on the nomination of the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy and the Minister for Finance, the joint shareholder Ministers.
