Australia Post – 200 years connecting the nation
The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, today congratulated Australia Post on its bicentenary.
"Australia Post is the oldest continually-run organisation in the country and has played a major part in the building of our nation," Senator Conroy said.
"It is also a major employer with over 35,000 workers, 3,000 licensed post office operators, 3,500 mail delivery contractors and nearly 4,500 retail outlets spread across the country."
"The postal service was instrumental opening up the country, supporting exploration and colonisation. It also provided a vital link to the world for early Australians."
"The shape and function of Australia Post has evolved over two centuries and I am sure that it will continue to adapt with a changing society and emerging technologies."
"After 200 years, Australia Post is still connecting and enriching the lives of Australians, every day – even in this digital age."
"This celebration highlights the important and trusted role Australia Post plays in our society."
"We should all be very proud of Australia Post, especially in its bicentenary year."
Senator Conroy today took part in a re-enactment of the delivery of the first mail to Sydney 200 years ago.
