Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy
Deputy Leader of the Government in the Senate

Livewire online community keeps young patients in touch

The Minister for Broadband, Communications and Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, today launched the Livewire online community.

"The Livewire online community is a fantastic example of broadband and digital technology, assisting young people whose lives have been disrupted by chronic illness or disability," Senator Conroy said.

"Livewire helps young people to stay in touch with those they love, and to connect and gain support from others who share a similar situation."

Livewire has been co-funded by the Starlight Children's Foundation and the Australian Government, which invested $7.2 million through the Clever Networks program.

"Enabling this type of broadband application is an important Government priority," Senator Conroy said.

"In healthcare, education, government services and across the economy, broadband has the potential to deliver significant benefits. It will enable new efficiencies, productivity, and importantly, better outcomes for citizens."

"With Livewire, we have a glimpse of the future, when broadband and online technologies will be commonplace in the delivery and enhancement of medical services."

"Over 35% of young people with a chronic illness or disability live outside Australia's metropolitan centres. Livewire will help overcome some of the challenges faced by young people separated from their families and friends."

Livewire aims to connect young Australians aged between 10 and 21 with a serious illness, chronic condition or disability via a safe and supportive online community.
