Contenders deliver proposals for National Broadband Network

The Minister for Broadband, Communications and Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, today welcomed a strong response to the Government's request for proposals to build Australia's National Broadband Network.

"Today marks a significant milestone in the process to build Australia's National Broadband Network. Proposals have been delivered and competitive evaluation will now begin."

"The strong response from industry proponents is vindication of the Government's commitment to undertake a fair, open and competitive process."

"The stage is now set for an extremely competitive assessment process."

"The National Broadband Network will set the foundation for Australia's future economic productivity and prosperity. Industry clearly understands this and has responded strongly to our competitive Request for Proposals."

The Rudd Government has a stated goal to improve broadband opportunities for all Australians. It has committed to invest up to $4.7 billion and consider regulatory changes for a National Broadband Network providing a minimum 12Mbps to 98% of homes and businesses.

"The National Broadband Network is one of the largest infrastructure investments undertaken by any Australian Government. It is a vital building block for our participation in the future digital economy," Senator Conroy said.

"It is clear from the public statements of proponents to date that the Government's process has produced substantial competitive tension - as was the Government's intent."

"The Government's independent Panel of Experts and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission will now get down to work on the assessment of these proposals."

In accordance with the National Broadband Network probity plan the Government is not in a position to discuss the substance of proposals.
