Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy
Deputy Leader of the Government in the Senate

Christmas the ideal time to switch-on to digital TV

The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, today encouraged Australians to enjoy a 'Digital TV Christmas'.

"With the transition to digital-only television broadcasts now well under way, Christmas is the perfect time for Australian viewing families to experience the many benefits of digital TV," Senator Conroy said.

The Government recently released a comprehensive switchover timetable, setting out a region-by-region transition to digital TV. Switchover will begin in Mildura in the first half of 2010 and be completed across Australia by 2013.

"There are many choices available for people to make the shift to digital TV. From a simple set-top-box through to a high-definition digital TV, the choice is yours," Senator Conroy said.

"Whether you're enjoying the Boxing Day Test cricket, New Year's Eve celebrations or the latest movie, the benefits of digital will be obvious."

Senator Conroy also reminded TV viewers that 2009 will see the introduction of new digital channels by the free-to-air broadcasters.

"The vast majority of Australian viewers will have access to more channels that ever before in 2009. Network Ten has already announced its new sports channel, ABC2 is well established already, so it makes sense to enjoy a digital TV Christmas this year, and be prepared for the new channels," Senator Conroy said.

Executive Director of the Digital Television Taskforce, Mr Andy Townend, said a set-top-box would make an ideal gift for parents and relatives.

"If you have parents or relatives who are perhaps unsure of the technology, you can buy them a set-top box, hook it up for them and introduce them to the benefits of digital TV," Mr Townend said.
