The Royal Australian Mint awards Gold, Silver and Bronze for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games

The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games are commemorated with the release of the Royal Australian Mint’s Melbourne 2006 Three Coin Set. The Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, launched the commemorative Coin Set today in Canberra with Games hopefuls from Australia, Phillip Rizzo, Jade Edmistone and Kerry Taurima.

The Set symbolises the winners medals for the Melbourne 2006 Games and also commemorates the 53 nations and 18 territories of the Commonwealth as well as Melbourne, host of the Games.

"The Royal Australian Mint is to be congratulated on the Melbourne 2006 Coin Program initiative. The coins have been crafted with the greatest of care and are outstanding examples of the Royal Australian Mint’s exceptionally high standards ”, Senator Kemp said.

“This is just one of the many ways the Australian Government is contributing to the overall success of the Games. The Australian Government is providing a package valued at over $290 million in direct financial assistance and provision of services to support the Games.”

Controller of the Mint, Dr Vivienne Thom, said, “With only 2500 of these special sets available these sets will undoubtedly create a lot of interest as the anticipation for the Games rises.”

The Three Coin Set features:

  • the unique Gold, Silver and Bronze Tricolour proof coin composed of a gold plated silver centre containing the Melbourne 2006 logo, a decorative silver middle ring and bronze coloured outer ring containing the sub graphics of all 16 sports being competed at the games;
  • the $5 City of Sport Fine Silver proof coin depicting the Melbourne city landscape along the famous Yarra River which flows through the city’s heart; and
  • the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Nations $5 Uncirculated Coin depicting key elements of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games logo representing the competing nations at the Games along with the image of the Queen’s crown at its centre.

This spectacular Three Coin Set is sure to be a jewel in the crown of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Coin Program.
