Re-appointments to Australia Council’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Board

The Federal Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, today announced two re-appointments to the Australia Council for the Art’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Board.

Mr Lafe Charlton and Ms Jennifer Martiniello have been re-appointed to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Board for a further 12 months.

“I look forward to these two members continuing their work with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Board, as their contributions so far have been invaluable,” Senator Kemp said.

Lafe Charlton is Artistic Director of the Aboriginal Centre for the Performing Arts in Brisbane, and was formerly Artistic Director of the Kooemba Jdarra Theatre Company. His career as an actor has included appearances with Kooemba Jdarra, the Queensland Theatre Company and the Sydney Theatre Company.

Jennifer Martiniello is the public officer of the Indigenous Writers Support Group in Canberra, Indigenous Advisor on Youth Programs for the Duke of Edinburgh Awards in Australia for the Australian Capital Territory Advisory Committee, a member of the Advisory Committee of the Australian Centre for Indigenous History at the Australian National University and a member of the Publishing Advisory Committee of Aboriginal Studies Press at the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Board supports the development and promotion of traditional and contemporary Indigenous arts practices, and encourages the generation of new forms of cultural/artistic expression among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in urban and regional areas.

It also encourages greater access by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to funding grants offered by the other boards of the Australia Council.

The Australia Council is the Australian Government’s arts funding body. It encourages the creativity and development of Australian artists and aims to increase access by all Australians to arts and cultural activities.
