New chief executive for Australian Sports Drug Agency
The Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, today announced the appointment of Mr Richard Ings as the new Chief Executive of the Australian Sports Drug Agency (ASDA).
Mr Ings was previously the Executive Vice President of Rules and Competition for the Association of Tennis Professionals where he designed and implemented the Association’s anti-doping code.
“Richard is a prominent Australian who has become a leading figure in the international fight against drugs in sport,” Senator Kemp said.
“He brings a unique combination of leadership in anti-doping issues with high levels of business acumen and governance skills gained through his senior corporate experience with PepsiCo and Coca-Cola Amatil.”
Senator Kemp also announced that Mr Ings is the proposed appointee to the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Government’s new anti-doping body, the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA), pending the passage of legislation to establish it.
“The Government’s intention is that the new ASADA should absorb the existing drug testing, education and advocacy functions of ASDA by early next year,” Senator Kemp said.
Mr Ings will be relocating with his family from the United States of America and is expected to begin his role with ASDA in September 2005. Until that time, Mr Kim Terrell will remain acting Chief Executive of ASDA.
“The Australian Government looks forward to working closely with Richard Ings in the fight against drugs in sport,” Senator Kemp said.
