Major Works for Community Sport Projects

Australia’s local communities will be the big winners from the Australian Government’s commitment to community sporting facility funding , with around $38 million over three years from 2004-05 allocated for local sporting and recreational organisations and facilities.

The Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, said the funding is consistent with the Government’s election commitments to build active, healthy Australian communities, as outlined in the Building Australian Communities through Sport policy.

“The Government is investing $11.8 million in 2005/06 in local facilities which can provide the best opportunity for the community to participate in sport and produce future world champions,” Senator Kemp said.

The 2005-06 Budget includes a commitment to the redevelopment of Kogarah Oval in Sydney and the redevelopment of the Whitten Oval in Victoria.

“These allocations for sport and recreation organisations and facilities range from repairs and upgrades to smaller local facilities in regional and urban areas to major redevelopment projects for large sporting venues,” Senator Kemp said.

Overall, the Government’s three year commitment will provide greater infrastructure to address unmet demand for community sport and recreation facilities across the nation and includes funding toward:

  • upgrades to 7 different sporting facilities in Tasmania;
  • 27 different sport projects throughout regional and urban Australia;
  • upgrades of Penrith Stadium; and
  • development of the Geelong Legends Sporting Boulevard as part of Stage 2 of the Skilled Stadium Redevelopment plan at Kardinia Park.
