Australian Sports Commission board appointment

The Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, today announced the appointment of Geoffrey Stooke OAM to the board of the Australian Sports Commission (ASC), Australia’s primary national sports administration and advisory agency.

“I am delighted that Mr Stooke has agreed to work with the ASC for a two year term,” Senator Kemp said.

Mr Stooke is Chairman of RugbyWA with a great depth of experience as a rugby coach.

During his career he has coached the Western Australian state, Western Australian Under 21 and Western Australian Schoolboys teams. He was also on the coaching panel of the Australian Under 21 Team for four years.

Among his other responsibilities, Mr Stooke is the current Managing Director and Chairman of the Standard Wool Australia Group of companies, the largest wool business owned and operated by Western Australian interests. He is a Director of the Australian Wool Exchange, a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management.

Mr Stooke has held senior management positions in the fishing and resources industries and was an army officer from 1966 to 1980 with service in Australia and overseas.

“With his proven leadership and business management skills and his background in rugby coaching, Mr Stooke is an outstanding candidate for the ASC board,” Senator Kemp said.

“I believe that he will make a valuable contribution to its operations.”
