Australian Cyclist dies in Germany

It is with deep regret I confirm the tragic death of an Australian cyclist in Germany this morning.

Tragically, Amy Gillett has been killed and five of her team mates seriously injured while training near the town of Zeulenroda, in preparation for the Tour of Thuringen.

All cyclists have been taken to hospital and we are awaiting further medical advice on their condition.

I have asked the Australian Sports Commission and Australian Institute of Sport to provide all possible support and assistance to the parents of the cyclists involved during this difficult time.

Australian Sports Commission chairman Peter Bartels, the Director of AIS, Dr Peter Fricker, and an AIS psychologist are expected to travel to Germany as soon as possible to provide any necessary support.

With the help of DFAT, the ASC and Cycling Australia are making all necessary arrangements to ensure that all appropriate communications and assistance are put in place.

Five of the Australian Women’s Road Cycling Team are on AIS scholarships.

This is a most tragic event. These young cyclists are the cream of Australia’s new young cyclists pursuing their dreams.

It is indeed a sad day for Australian cycling and the sporting community as a whole.

On behalf of the Australian Government and all Australian, I’d like to extend our deepest sympathies to Amy’s family during this difficult time.
