AIS Redevelopment on Track

The Australian Government will enter into the third year of its four year commitment to upgrade facilities at the Bruce campus of the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in the ACT, the Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, announced today.

Senator Kemp said the four year upgrade, now totalling $70 million, would strengthen Australia’s place in the world of sport, particularly leading up to the 2008 Olympic Games.

“Over the past 23 years, the AIS has become Australia’s premier sports training institution and a leader in world sports science, training and development,” Senator Kemp said.

“It has made a major contribution to our sporting success by identifying and developing athletes from all over Australia.

“Each year, the AIS offers scholarships to 700 athletes in 26 sports. It is a place where talented athletes can receive the training and support to become champions.

The Australian Government will be investing over $20 million in 2005-06 in the redevelopment project. The AIS redevelopment will focus on new and refurbished facilities at the Bruce Campus.

“When completed, this redevelopment will ensure that the AIS remains at the forefront of world sport as a centre of innovation and excellence in the training and development of elite athletes and teams,” Senator Kemp said.
