AIS Partners with Australian Dancers
The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and the Australian Dance Council have joined forces to help professional dancers plan their career paths.
The Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, welcomed the announcement by the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and the Australian Dance Council – Ausdance they had formed a new partnership to enable professional dancers to access the Athlete Career and Education (ACE) Program.
“This is an exciting partnership which gives professional dancers certainty about their future and shows the diversity of programs the AIS has to offer.” Senator Kemp said.
The ACE program aims ‘to provide nationally consistent services which will assist elite athletes to undertake education, vocation and personal development opportunities whilst pursuing and achieving excellence in sport’.
In research which has spanned more than a decade, Ausdance has identified the same needs of professional dancers to services such as those offered to our elite athletes. Ausdance and the AIS have been working together to ensure that the ACE program – an integrated approach to personal and professional development – will be offered to professional dancers by the ACE team throughout Australia. Based on individual assessment, the program links to –
- career planning
- education guidance
- personal development
- transition
Access to the ACE program will be offered to three professional dancers in each State and Territory over the next 12 months. This pilot program for dancers will then be assessed and, if successful, further extended over the following years.
“This program will help fill an enormous gap in professional dancers’ ability to properly plan their career paths and eventual transition as performers,” Ausdance National Executive Officer, Julie Dyson, said today.
“The AIS is to be congratulated on broadening the reach of the ACE program for this pilot. The program will provide a unique opportunity for Australia’s dance professionals to reach their potential – through their highly transferable skills – as some of the most creative individuals in our society.”
