AFL to become WADA code compliant
The Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, welcomed today’s announcement by the AFL they would become WADA code compliant by 1 November 2005.
Senator Kemp said the AFL indicated its position following a meeting in Melbourne today, which included representatives from the Australian Sports Commission and the Australian Sports Drug Agency.
“The AFL’s announcement today is welcome news,” Senator Kemp said.
“Andrew Demetriou confirmed today the AFL would finalise consultations with all of its stakeholders and it would become WADA code compliant by November 1 this year.
“As a result of today’s discussions, Government funding to the AFL will resume.” Senator Kemp said.
“The AFL now joins all major sporting codes in Australia in becoming WADA code compliant.
“Australia has been acknowledged as world leaders in fighting drugs in sport and will continue to pursue a sporting environment in which athletes are able to compete fairly,” Senator Kemp said.
