Supporting the arts in regional South Australia
The Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, today announced $141,225 under the Regional Arts Fund for 32 projects covering more than 20 regional communities and over 90 artists in South Australia .
'The Australian Government is proud to support a diverse range of cultural activity across regional South Australia through the latest round of the Regional Arts Fund program,' Senator Kemp said.
'Through the program, South Australian communities-from the remote far north and down the Limestone Coast to Mount Gambier -will have the opportunity to stage cultural events that develop the skills of local artists and promote the cultural life of the community.'
Major initiatives supported include:
• Directing the Hero Within -young people across regional South Australia will be supported to explore their worlds through documentary filmmaking over two years;
• Carclew's Regional Program -a partnership to support the Regional Program for Carclew Youth Arts in 2004-05; and
• The Bay Wave - this project seeks support to create a limestone sculpture with the community to be placed at the entrance to Port MacDonnell.
For the first time, communities in South Australia were able to apply to the New Communities Program for funding, as part of the Regional Arts Fund. This program is designed to encourage arts activity and participation in isolated communities or those who have never applied for support. Three communities successfully applied to this program ‑ Kongorong Progress Advisory Committee , Yacka Community Development Board and Mimili Maku Arts.
The Regional Arts Fund is an Australian Government initiative which supports the arts in regional and remote Australia . Country Arts SA manages the Fund in South Australia on behalf of the Australian Government. Applications for the next round of funding close Monday 14 March 2005.
The Australian Government is committed to the Regional Arts Fund. In the 2004-05 Budget, the Government provided $10.7 million to extend the program for a further four years, and has subsequently announced an additional $5.4 million over four years.
