SPORT LEADERSHIP GRANTS FOR WOMEN

The Federal Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, today encouraged applications under the Sport Leadership Grants for Women program.

The Australian Government through the Australian Sport Commission and the Office for Women will invest $400,000 in the delivery of the 2005 Sport Leadership Grants for Women program across Australia. This is consistent with an Australian Government commitment to double the amount available for this program.

"The Australian Government wants to encourage and support the involvement of women and girls in all aspects of sport, including as athletes and as administrators", Senator Kemp said.

"In 2004, grants were provided to 68 individuals and sports organisations to develop women's sport leadership skills. The recipients included women in rural and remote areas, Indigenous women, women in disability sport and women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

"The Australian Government will continue to encourage female participation in all aspects of sport in Australia ."

The grants are available in five key areas: high performance coaching and officiating; Indigenous women in rural and remote communities; women in disability sport; women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and women in general sport leadership.

Funding of up to $5,000 is available to successful individual applicants and up to $10,000 for approved organisations.

Applications for the Sport Leadership Grants for Women close on Friday, 28 January 2005.
