RESIGNATION OF AIS DIRECTOR

The Federal Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator the Hon. Rod Kemp, today acknowledged the work of the Director of the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), Mr Michael Scott, who has announced that he will be resigning after four years to take up a new position based in Melbourne.

"I am sorry to see Michael Scott leave the AIS. He has made an enormous contribution to Australian sport as Director of the AIS over the past four years", Senator Kemp said.

"Mr Scott's tireless efforts to achieve continued improvement and excellence at the AIS made a very important contribution to our magnificent success at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Of the 49 medals won at Athens, 32 were won by current or former AIS scholarship holders.

"Under Mr Scott's leadership, the AIS has further enhanced its international reputation as a world leading elite sports training institution.

"I wish Mr Scott every success in his future endeavours."

The AIS is the jewel in the crown of Australian sport. The Australian Government is firmly committed to the future success of the AIS, as demonstrated by the $70 million upgrade of the facilities at its Bruce and Yarralumla campuses.

This upgrade will reinforce the position of the AIS as the national centre of excellence in sport, and will be completed over the next three years.
