New partnership to strengthen Indigenous arts in Tasmania

The Federal Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp and Tasmanian Minister for the Arts, Ms Lara Giddings, today welcomed a new partnership agreement between Arts Tasmania and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Board (ATSIAB) of the Australia Council.

`The Australian Government, through the Australia Council for the arts, is pleased to contribute $25,000 in support of the Tasmania Strategic Indigenous Arts Development initiative,' Senator Kemp said.

`This new agreement is a commitment by both agencies to strengthen support for Indigenous artists and culture in Tasmania.'

The objectives of the initiative include an advanced collaborative partnership between ATSIAB and Arts Tasmania, as well as strategic investments in arts activity.

`Arts Tasmania and ATSIAB work closely together to develop Indigenous art and culture in Tasmania through a range of initiatives,' Ms Giddings said.

`One of these initiatives was the recent publication of Respecting Cultures - working with the Tasmanian Aboriginal community and Aboriginal artists by Arts Tasmania's Aboriginal Advisory Committee. This grant enabled the partnership to produce results for our Tasmanian indigenous artists.'

ATSIAB also helps Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to claim, control and enhance their cultural inheritance through its grant categories.

Each year the Australian Government through ATSIAB provides approximately $4 million to artists, artsworkers, community groups and organisations. For more information about ATSIAB visit the Australia Council website at www.ozco.gov.au

Arts Tasmania is part of the Department of Tourism, Parks, Heritage and the Arts and is responsible for the development of integrated policy and planning for arts and culture in Tasmania. More information about Arts Tasmania is available from www.arts.tas.gov.au
