National Library of Australia Chairman Re-appointed

The Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, today announced the re-appointment of Sir James Gobbo as Chairman of the Council of the National Library of Australia.

'As Chairman of the Council, Sir James has been at the forefront of a period of change for the National Library,' Senator Kemp said.

'His managerial experience, expertise in law and extensive background with ethnic and community organisations and advisory bodies have been of enormous benefit to the Council.'

Sir James is a retired Judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria and was the Governor of Victoria from 1997 until 2000. He is also the Chairman of the National Advisory Committee on Ageing and the Council of the Order of Australia.

'The National Library makes an important contribution to the continuing vitality of Australia's culture and heritage, and its digitisation program continues to improve national access to important cultural collections,' Senator Kemp said.

'The National Library has hosted a number of successful exhibitions in the last few years including The Treasures from the World's Great Libraries, which exceeded all expectations and attracted over 115,000 visitors.'

'I am delighted Sir James has agreed to continue in this role and I look forward to his contribution to the Council in the future,' Senator Kemp said.

The National Library of Australia was established in 1960 and ensures that nationally significant documentary resources relating to Australia, are collected and conserved, and made available to all Australians.
