More cultural organisations to benefit from philanthropic support
An additional 37 cultural organisations listed on the Register of Cultural Organisations (ROCO) can offer donors a tax deduction for their support of a wide range of arts related activities, the Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp said today.
'The register has increased to 983 participating organisations covering cultural activities such as music and arts festivals, performance and community broadcasting groups,' Senator Kemp said.
New groups listed on ROCO include the Northern Rivers Conservatorium Arts Centre, Jirrawun Arts, the 56th Intervarsity Choral Festival and the Croc Festival Foundation.
ROCO provides cultural organisations with greater opportunities to attract financial support from individuals and corporate bodies by being able to offer a tax deduction for donations.
'Since ROCO began in 1991 more than $216 million has been donated to organisations, demonstrating that Australians are committed to supporting the arts,' Senator Kemp said.
'This enthusiastic response is important to the sustainability of Australia's non profit cultural sector and gives Australians greater access to cultural experiences.
'The Australian Government provides a generous framework of tax incentives so that the community, business and government can work in partnership in supporting cultural activities across the country.'
ROCO is administered by the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts and operates under the gift provisions of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997.
