Investigation of sport doping allegations discussion paper

The Federal Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, today announced the release of a discussion paper on the options for the independent investigation of sport doping allegations including a possible Sports Doping Investigation Board.

'Over the last 12 months, allegations in relation to elite Australian cyclists, including members of the Australian cycling team for the Athens Olympics, have highlighted the need for an independent and transparent process to investigate doping allegations in sport,' Senator Kemp said.

'The credibility and legitimacy of Australia's anti-doping effort is closely linked to the level of confidence athletes, sport officials and the Australian public have in the investigation process for all doping allegations.

'The Australian Government has been working on the way forward to deal with doping allegations and better manage hearings.'

The discussion paper canvases the option of an independent body with the power and duty to investigate suspected doping infractions, such as substance abuse.

'This issue involves complex policy and legal considerations. To ensure Australia gets the best solution for our particular context, the Government is keen to obtain the views of all interested parties', Senator Kemp said.

'I strongly encourage key stakeholders and other interested members of the public to comment on the discussion paper.'

The closing date for submissions is 23 December 2004.

The discussion paper is available online under the 'Consultation' link at www.dcita.gov.au.
