Hugh Jackman Tony Award success

The Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, today congratulated Hugh Jackman on winning a coveted Tony Award for his portrayal of the late Peter Allen in the Broadway musical The Boy from Oz.

'Hugh Jackman has carved out a remarkable career in television, cinema and theatre in Australia and on the world stage,' Senator Kemp said.

'It is a tribute to his skills and dedication as an entertainer that Mr Jackman has been recognised with a prestigious Tony Award for best performance by a leading actor in a musical.

Born in Sydney Hugh Jackman studied at the Western Australia Academy of the Performing Arts and has appeared on television in the series Corelli (1995) and Blue Heelers (1996), in movies including Van Helsing (2004), Swordfish (2001) and X-Men (2001), and on stage in musicals, including Beauty and the Beast (1996), Sunset Boulevard (1997), Oklahoma (1998).

'Hugh is a singer, dancer and actor that Australia is justly proud of and I wish him continued success in his career.'
