Festivals Australia celebrating more events

The Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, today announced funding of $511,948 for 40 grants under the latest round of the Festivals Australia program.

'The Australian Government is committed to encouraging a greater awareness and participation in cultural activities. Through Festivals Australia, local areas can support and celebrate their community identity,' Senator Kemp said.

This grant round will support a range of cultural activities at a variety of festivals across Australia, including:

  • Lights! Camera! Action!-Filmmaking Workshops will hold two-day workshops in Tumbi Umbi for amateur filmmakers, actors and actresses with the final films to be screened.
  • Ballad of the Bob Cats-the Queensland Music Festival plans to develop a new work inspired by the people, mines, landscape and big machinery of Mount Isa.
  • Big Moon Rising Opening Concert and Festival Masterclass Series will showcase the music of professional songwriters, musicians and emerging artists of Broome and the surrounding region.

A list of the successful grantees for the program is attached and available online from www.dcita.gov.au/festivals.

The deadline for applications in the next round of funding is 15 February 2005.

Festivals Australia is an Australian Government funding program which provides funding for arts based projects which enhance the cultural program of regional and community festivals. In the 2004 election, the Coalition announced that it would provide an additional $0.5 million per annum to Festivals Australia, which will support a performing artist or company to spend up to one month in a regional community developing a performance piece relevant to that community.
