Australian Sports Commission and Australian Sports Foundation Chair reappointments
The Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, today announced the reappointments of Mr Peter Bartels as Chairman, and Mr Cory Bernardi as a member, of the Australian Sports Commission (ASC).
'I am delighted that both Mr Bartels and Mr Bernardi have agreed to continue their work with the Australian Sports Commission for a further two years,' Senator Kemp said.
'Their reappointments will provide valuable continuity to the work of the board. The vast experience and skills that both Mr Bartels and Mr Bernardi bring to the ASC board are greatly appreciated as is their continued commitment to Australian sport at all levels.'
Peter Bartels is Patron of the Australian Cycling Federation, a Director of the organising committee for the Melbourne Commonwealth Games 2006 and a Director of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation. He was a member of the Business Council of Australia for eight years as well as a Director of the Melbourne Business School ( Melbourne University).
'Under Mr Bartel's leadership, the ASC has continued to encourage greater community participation in sport as well as linking sport in a positive sense to social and health issues. The ASC has made a significant contribution to recent Australian sporting successes, especially at the 2004 Athens Olympics', Senator Kemp said.
Cory Bernardi is a professional financial adviser with Portfolio Planning Services Ltd, a former Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holder and has represented Australia in rowing.
Mr Bernardi is also currently the Chair of the Australian Sports Foundation Board and has agreed to continue in this role for the next two years. The ASFB is tasked with generating funds for the development of sport from the corporate sector and the community sector.
