Australian National Maritime Museum appointments
The Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, today announced the reappointment of Mr Mark Bethwaite as Chairman of the Australian National Maritime Museum Council, and the appointment of a new member, Mr John Rothwell AO.
'I am delighted that Mr Bethwaite has agreed to continue his work as Chairman,' Senator Kemp said.
Mark Bethwaite, a civil engineer, is the managing director and CEO of Australian Business Ltd. He is a champion yachtsman, and represented Australia at the Olympics in 1972 and 1976.
'Mr Bethwaite has brought enthusiasm and experience to his role as Chairman and is making a tremendous contribution to the Museum,' said Senator Kemp.
'Mr Rothwell will bring a wealth of experience in the marine industry to the Museum.'
Mr Rothwell is Executive Chairman of Austal Ships. He was recently appointed an Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia for his service to shipbuilding and his contribution to vocational education and training.
'Mr Rothwell's interest in skills education fits well with the museums mission, part of which is to foster traditional skills and practices and his background as an entrepreneur-he was Western Region Entrepreneur of the Year in 2002-will be invaluable to the museums continued development,' Senator Kemp said.
The National Maritime Museum has been promoting the history of human activity on waterways and seas since 1991. It has evolved as a dynamic and innovative cultural and educational resource and has a travelling exhibition program that takes exhibits all over Australia.
