Australia Council appointments
The Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, today announced the appointment of Ms Lesley Alway as Chair of the Visual Arts/Craft Board and the re-appointment of Dr Peter Goldsworthy as Chair of the Australia Council's Literature Board.
'I am delighted to welcome Ms Alway as Chair of the Visual Arts/Craft Board. Ms Alway is currently the Director of the Heide Museum of Modern Art in Melbourne ,' Senator Kemp said.
'Under the proposed reorganisation of the Australia Council, the Visual Arts/Crafts Board will also reflect new media arts. I am confident that the experience and skill of Ms Alway will benefit this sector.
'I am also very pleased that Dr Goldsworthy has agreed to continue in the role of Chair of the Literature Board for another eighteen months. He is one of Australia 's most talented authors'.
Ms Alway is an experienced arts manager who is currently the Director of the Heide Museum of Modern Arts, and was previously the Director of Arts Victoria and the Director of the Australian Government's Artbank. Ms Alway is also a member of the National Exhibition Touring Scheme (Victoria) Committee of Management and Chairperson of the City of Melbourne 's Public Arts Committee.
Dr Goldsworthy has written a number of novels including Maestro , which is a set text on Year 12 syllabuses in several states and has been made into an interactive study guide for teachers and students. He has also won a number of awards including the Commonwealth Poetry Prize, the South Australian Bicentennial Award and an Australian Bicentennial Literary Award.
'Both Ms Alway and Dr Goldsworthy are greatly respected in their fields and I am confident that the Australia Council's members and staff are looking forward to working with them,' Senator Kemp said.
The Australia Council is the Australian Government's principal arts funding and advisory body. It encourages the creativity and development of Australian artists and aims to increase access by all Australians to arts and cultural activities.
