The Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, today announced the appointment of Mr Djambawa Marawili and Ms Brenda Croft to the Australia Council's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Board.

'Both Mr Marawili and Ms Croft have made a significant contribution on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and I thank them for agreeing to participate on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Board,' Senator Kemp said.

Mr Djambawa Marawili is an experienced artist who won the 1996 Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award Best Bark Painting Prize and who has exhibited in the National Gallery of Australia and Old Parliament House in Canberra, the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney and the Crafts Museum in New Delhi, India. Ms Brenda Croft is currently the Senior Curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art at the National Gallery of Australia and has previously been the curator of Indigenous Art at the Art Gallery of Western Australia. Ms Croft is also a well respected artist whose recent exhibitions include Man about town and In My Father's House at the Stills Gallery in Sydney and Images: Contemporary Photos by Aboriginal Artists at the Aboriginal Art Museum in the Netherlands.

'Both Mr Marawili and Ms Croft will play a valuable role on the Board, sharing their extensive knowledge and skills in Aboriginal and Islander art,' Senator Kemp said.
