Exploitation of Indigenous Artists Being Scrutinised

Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, today announced moves to combat the exploitation of Indigenous artists.

Senator Kemp said he was disturbed by media reports of irregularities in the Indigenous art sector and will work with communities and the Indigenous art industry to stamp out the problem.

“Australia’s Indigenous arts movement is a great success story. It has been growing dramatically over recent years bringing much needed income to Indigenous artists and their communities. This valuable industry also gives Australia a unique profile on the international stage,” Senator Kemp said.

“Reputable art dealers and community art centres look after the interests of their artists. But, increasing sales and higher prices encourages privateers and dodgy operators to move in and exploit vulnerable artists.

“I want to ensure that more is done to stamp out this problem.”

Senator Kemp said the Government will consult with peak bodies and relevant federal and state government agencies to map out strategies for dealing with issues like trade practices, consumer education and awareness and the need for regulation and enforcement.

“I plan to meet with representatives from the industry to hear what they have to say. I think it is important for the industry and government to come together to discuss possible strategies for addressing these issues,” Senator Kemp said.

“My department has already held initial talks with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and Indigenous Affairs Minister, Mal Brough, has agreed to refer the matter to the National Indigenous Council for advice.

“From these consultations I expect to be able to draw together a practical response,” Senator Kemp said.

‘The approach will build on the Governments existing efforts to strengthen the Indigenous visual arts industry and reduce the exploitation of Indigenous artists.

“I hope to announce details of a new strategy in the near future,” Senator Kemp said.
