Additional funding for the Australian Youth Orchestra
The Australian Youth Orchestra (AYO) will receive an additional $1.9 million in funding over four years to ensure its long-term sustainability.
The Minister for Arts and Sport, Senator the Hon Rod Kemp, said that the increased funding, announced in the 2006–07 Budget, will ensure the AYO remains at the forefront of supporting and developing our nation’s most talented young musicians.
“Through programmes such as the National Music Camp, professional fellowships and performances by the Orchestra, the AYO has provided leadership and inspiration to gifted Australian performers for over 50 years,” he said.
“Almost every Australian musician currently employed by our symphony orchestras has participated in AYO programmes.”
In 2005–06 the Australian Government provided funding of over $1.3 million for the AYO through the Cultural Development Programme.
Recent performances by the AYO have included the world premiere of Songs of the Yellow Bedroom at the Adelaide Bank Festival of the Arts and a critically acclaimed concert version of Tristan and Isolde at the Queensland Music Festival.
