Public Consultations on Telework Begin

The Australian Telework Advisory Committee (ATAC) will hold public consultations as part of its review into breaking down the barriers to more Australian workers teleworking, the Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator Helen Coonan, said today.

Telework refers to work undertaken away from the traditional workplace, enabled by information and communication technologies.

“Consultation with members of the public and the private-sector is a key component of the telework review,” Senator Coonan said.

“Individuals and organisations with telework experience and expertise are encouraged to make a submission to the Committee’s review in order to share their views.

“Recommendations made by the Committee will assist the Australian Government to implement policies and practices that enable workers to balance work and family responsibilities.”

Information on the consultation process can be found on website of the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts website (see www.dcita.gov.au/ie/broadband).

Submissions to the ATAC should be made by Friday, 27 May 2005 to telework@dcita.gov.au or by post to:

Manager, Connectivity Policy
Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts
GPO Box 2154
Canberra ACT 2601
AUSTRALIA

ATAC is also organising consultative forums for key stakeholders, including organisations that have undertaken telework arrangements.

Forums are scheduled in Brisbane on 3 May 2005, Melbourne on 10 May 2005 and Sydney on 19 May 2005.

Forums will also be held on the Gold Coast and in Longreach in Queensland and in Tasmania. Dates for these forums will be announced shortly.

As part of the consultative process the Committee will meet with State and Territory government agencies to discuss their telework experiences.
