Ministerial Change for Arts and Sport

The Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator Helen Coonan today congratulated Senator George Brandis SC on his appointment as the Minister for Arts and Sport.

“Senator Brandis has been a valuable contributor and colleague since 2000 and he will be a welcome addition both to the portfolio and to the Senate Ministry team,” Senator Coonan said.

Senator Coonan said she expected that Senator Brandis’ well known analytical skills would be invaluable in looking after the needs of the Arts and Sport sector.

“His demonstrated capacity for enquiry and attention to detail will be invaluable when determining policy for the Arts and Sport portfolio.”

Senator Coonan also recognised the contribution of Senator Rod Kemp who will retire at the next election after holding the position of Minister for Arts and Sport since 2001.

“Senator Kemp retires after serving for over 10 years in the Coalition Ministry and I place on record his outstanding dedication and service, particularly to the Arts and Sport Ministry.”

Senator Brandis will be sworn in with the other new Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries next Tuesday the 30th January 2007.
