Australian Special Air Service Commemorative Stamp

The Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator the Hon Helen Coonan launched the Australian Special Air Service Commemorative Stamp – in recognition of 50 years of outstanding service to the nation by the Special Air Service Regiment.

“This anniversary of the Australian SAS is a special milestone in the nation’s military history.

“These stamps, to be sold across Australia, will raise the public’s awareness of a significant moment in time for our SAS.”

Senator Coonan said stamps not only recognise the SAS motto ‘Who Dares Wins’, but also the diverse operational theatres that the Australian SAS have operated in over the years.

“They should also remind all Australians of the sacrifices of SAS service. Not only do unit members endure combat and the hazards of operational work, but also from time spent separated from their family and friends.”

Senator Coonan said Australia Post first published a stamp containing images of Australian armed forces in 1935.

“This was a stamp commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Landing at ANZAC. Since then, Australia Post has published a further 24 stamps celebrating various other significant milestones of our armed services.

“We should all be extremely proud that this Australian SAS 50th Anniversary stamp will join a long list of important moments in our nation’s history marked by Australian stamps,” Senator Coonan said.
