Australia Post achieves strong performance in 2005–06
18 October 2006
The Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator Helen Coonan, welcomed the strong performance of Australia Post for the year ended 30 June 2006, as set out in its Annual Report for 2005–06 which was tabled in Parliament today.
“Australia Post is a Government Business Enterprise which provides a world class postal service,” Senator Coonan said.
“I am pleased that Australia Post again demonstrated its ability to achieve a high level of performance, combined with outstanding financial results, while meeting or exceeding all of its community service obligations.
“Some of the statistics are staggering—5.42 billion mail items handled, revenue of $4.53 billion, more than one million customers served every business day, with 95.6 per cent of domestic letters delivered on time.
“The Australia Post Board and every one of its 34,842 employees deserve congratulations for an excellent performance.”
The Australian Government is committed to ensuring that Australia has a reliable, affordable and accessible postal service. This is especially important for people living in rural and remote Australia for whom Australia Post is a vital community asset.
Senator Coonan thanked former Chairman Ms Linda Nichols, whose nine year term concluded with her retirement in September 2006.
“The strength of Australia Post’s performance as set out in this report stands as testimony to Ms Nichols’ term as Chairman of Australia Post,” Senator Coonan said.
